AC/EA
This strategy teaches you to solve addition and subtraction problems by combining and separating tens and ones.
For example:
24 + 41=
First you separate the 10's and add them together:
20 + 40=60
Then you need to add the 1's together:
4 + 1= 5
Lastly you add the two answers together:
60 + 5=65
Here are some ones for you to try at home:
1. 25 + 35=
2. 35 + 33=
3. 66 + 77=
You can also use this strategy to work out subtraction problems.
For example:
64 - 32=
First you have to subtract the 10's from each other:
60 - 30=30
Then you have to subtract the 1's from each other:
4 - 2= 2
Lastly you add the two answers together:
30 + 2= 32
Try these ones out for yourself:
1. 78 - 47=
2. 96 - 60=
3. 99 - 83=

Rules for Adding and Subtracting Integers
Adding Integers
(+) + (+) = positive (add the absolute values)
(-) + (-) = negative (add the absolute values)
(+) + (-) = ? (subtract the absolute values)
(-) + (+) = ? (subtract the absolute values)
Note: (+) means positive, (-) means negative, and (?) represents the sign of the greatest number in absolute value
Subtracting Integers
(+) - (+) = (+) + (-)= ? (subtract the absolute values)
(-) - (-) = (-) + (+)= ? (subtract the absolute values)
(+) - (-) = (+) + (+)= (+) (add the absolute values)
(-) - (+) = (-) + (-)= (-) (add the absolute values)
